My son started 11+tutoring in September and his progress in maths and English since then has been very impressive. He is very engaged in both subjects and thoroughly enjoys the weekly sessions. While there are currently no state-funded grammar schools in Sheffield, many local parents look toward highly selective schools in neighboring regions. For high-achieving students in South Yorkshire, the most common route is applying to Heckmondwike Grammar School
For families willing to travel further or consider relocating, the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium in Greater Manchester is the next logical choice. Consortium Schools: One single exam allows application to five schools: Altrincham Grammar (Boys & Girls), Sale Grammar, Stretford Grammar, and Urmston Grammar.
Heckmondwike Grammar School

Catchment Area: Although the school has a specific local priority area (postcodes including WF16 and parts of WF15), a significant number of places are awarded based on highest exam scores, regardless of where the student lives. This makes it a very popular choice for Sheffield students.
School Status: It is a co-educational state grammar school and an Academy. While it is located within the Kirklees Council authority, its academy status means it is independent of the local council for its day-to-day operations and admissions.
Admission Process: Entry is based on an 11 Plus Entrance Exam. For September 2027 entry, the registration deadline will in June 2026 (TBC), with the entrance examination scheduled for September , 2026.
Transport from Sheffield: There are no direct public bus routes from Sheffield to the school. However, a dedicated private bus service is available for students covering Sheffield, Rotherham, and Barnsley.

Entrance Examination
All pupils seeking entry into Year 7 must sit the school’s entrance examination. The exam usually takes place early in September of the school year prior to entry.
What does the entrance exam entail?
Children take an entrance examination early in the Autumn term preceding the September of entry. Papers will test a range of reasoning skills in a variety of contexts and they are designed to be predictors of likely future performance. The results from each paper will be standardised, age-weighted and combined into a total standardised age score. The outcome of the exam is communicated to parents in mid-October, prior to the deadline for submission of the common application form (CAF) to the local authority. This does not necessarily constitute the formal offer of a place since, in recent years, there have been more children reaching the required standard than there are places available. The formal offer of a place will be communicated via the Local Authority in early March.

Traffford Grammar School Consortium 11 Plus Exam Format Details
The Trafford Grammar School Consortium comprises Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School, which means that children applying to any of these five schools only have to take the 11plus test once. GL Assessment are the test provider for Year 7 entry testing for September 2024 and beyond.
The entrance examination will consist of two tests (2 x 1 hours) containing:
* verbal
* non-verbal
* mathematics skills.
